Understand your Exercise before you do it?

Filed under: HEALTH — Anil @ 4:27 pm
Without understanding what the core is and why it is so important to strengthen it, you might be wasting a lot of sit-ups. More than just your abdominal muscles, your core encompasses all of the muscle layers in your trunk and pelvis that regulate movement, balance, and strength.
“When you engage your core, you’re not just tightening the superficial abdominal muscles,” says Terri Nishimoto, PCFP, a physical therapist in Denver. “You should feel deep muscles pulling everything in. You should engage your core in any activity that loads the spine; when you do, it should feel like a corset tightening around you. I tell people to imagine pulling their belly button to their spine.”
You can strengthen these muscles by doing Pilates, Vinyasa yoga, or FitBall classes at least three times per week. Or try these easy exercises.
Heel slides. Lie on your back with your legs straight out. Put your hands on your pelvis to make sure it remains still while you bend one knee and slide that foot up along the other leg toward your glutes, contracting your core. Then slide it back down to the starting position. Do this several times, alternating legs.
Clams. Lie on your side with your legs on the floor, bent 90 degrees in front of you and your knees together. Rotate your upper leg upward, keeping your feet together. Do 15 reps, then switch sides and repeat.
Plank. Lie face down, resting on your forearms. Push off the floor, similar to doing a pushup, but instead of using your hands for support, your forearms remain on the floor parallel to one another. Keep your back flat and try to maintain a straight line from your head to your heels. Hold for 15 seconds, lower and repeat. Work up to 60 seconds.

Good Spices for Good Health:Final Part!

Filed under: OTHERS — Anil @ 11:40 am
Turmeric: Curbs Inflammation
HOW IT WORKS: An ancient spice that gives curry its deep golden-orange color, turmeric reduces the inflammation in the body that causes pain. Curcumin, a component in turmeric, inhibits cell enzymes that contribute to inflammation. TRY TO GET: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day. USE IT: Add a dash to organic canned soups, such as tomato, lentil, or black bean varieties.
Thyme: Eases a Cough
HOW IT WORKS: Thyme is an antispasmodic, which helps with bouts of nonstop coughing. Thyme’s antiseptic properties also make it very effective against inflammation of the throat, which can cause coughing. TRY TO GET: 2 to 3 teaspoons a day. USE IT: For a simple vinaigrette, whisk together 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves with 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar, 1 teaspoon honey, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil.
